City Ballet Theater

Dress Code

We believe that it is important to keep all attire modest and appropriate. This allows the dancer to move freely while in class without being concerned with their attire and helps to keep our environment family friendly. Proper attire also allows the instructor to visually evaluate the muscle placement and body alignment, which in turn leads to healthier and safer dancing. Please find the guidelines for BOTH classes and performances in the corresponding areas for attire and shoes below.

ATTIRE & DANCE SHOES
for all PROGRAMS & CLASSES

For Adult Classes, please see our “Adult Class” page for more casual options

Please note the following specific requirements for attire and shoes for classes, as well as the specific requirements for performances. Also see below this for additional warm-ups, accessories, etc that are allowed or not allowed.

To help keep our environment family-friendly and for character/costume requirements, any visible tattoos are at the evaluation of the Director.

GIRLS and YOUNG WOMEN:

The following are REQUIRED for classes, rehearsals, etc.:

– ANY COLOR LEOTARD (for all classes; no words or symbols except dance brands – e.g. “Bloch”)

Please Note: Halter leotards, strapless or one-shoulder leotards, two piece leotards, leotards that appear to be two-piece (e.g. mesh sides/middle), leotards with cutouts, bare or mesh midriffs, low-cut leotards that expose any part of the bust, leotards that do not cover the bottom, or sports bras as a top are not allowed. Any color and acceptable style is allowed for class, but a black camisole leotard is required for performances.

Skirts or loose-fitting clothes/shorts/pants are not allowed as they can get in the way of learning movements and make it difficult for the instructor to assess correct muscle use.

– CONVERTIBLE PINK TIGHTS (for all classes)

Dance Movement and Pre-Ballet students may wear footed tights instead of convertible if they prefer.

– SPILT-SOLE PINK BALLET SHOES (for all ballet-based classes)

Please Note: Full-sole shoes are allowed for Dance Movement and Pre-Ballet classes, however ballet-style house slippers – found at many major retailers – are not allowed. Skin-tone shoes are also allowed for class, but pink ballet shoes are required for performances.

Dancers who are on pointe (at the determination of the director) may wear any style of reputable brand pointe shoes for specified classes, so long as they have been fit properly by a professional fitter and are in a good, safe condition (Reputable brands include Bloch, Mirella, Capezio, Sansha, Chacott, Freed, Sô Dança, Nikolay (formerly known as Grishko in the USA), Russian Pointe, Suffolk, and Gaynor Minden). Dancers are expected to wear toe protection for pointe and it may be of any variety sold in dance stores – toe pads, lambs wool, etc. – and toe spacers are highly recommended to prevent bunions. Pink and skin-tone pointe shoes are allowed for class, but pink pointe shoes are required for performances.
